REPORT FROM THE FIELD
By Christopher Mbelwa
February 1, 2005
AHEAD works at the village level to meet basic needs of the underserved
rural population. Not only are we providing health care for women and
children, but also life and vocational skills for youth to overcome
challenges of ill health, illiteracy and poverty.
Monthly, we
visit all secondary schools in Kisarawe District to provide health
education, including reproductive health information and training
for peer counseling not only to our 200 scholarship
awardees but to all of the students. Our nurse provides home
based care for people in the villages who are suffering from incurable
diseases, including AIDS. Nurse Jamila provides medical care,
medicines, food, other basic commodities, and advice for patients and
their families.
AHEAD is very well accepted by community leaders, local government, students and parents.
