Day of Community Service at Kisarawe Hospital

November 1, 2009

As a part of AHEAD's continuing efforts to partner with international organizations,
AHEAD hosted the "Day of Community Service" for the Youth Summit during the 5th Annual African Diaspora Heritage Trail (ADHT) Conference which was held in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar from October 25-30, the first such conference on the continent of Africa.

The Day of Community Service was designed to provide visiting youth leaders opportunities to "give back" to an African community and understand how they too can make a difference and effect meaningful change in the lives of their peers. Youth from Bermuda, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and the United States as well as Kisarawe District leaders, AHEAD staff and students sandpapered and painted the Maternity Ward of the Kisarawe Hospital and landscaped the grounds. The youth all from varied areas of the African Diaspora, also had opportunity to engage one another one-on-one, affording further opportunity to appreciate the similarities and commonalities of our shared experience.  Under the direction of AHEAD Executive Director Elvira Williams and AHEAD Board of Director Karen Spellman, the AHEAD "Day of Community Service" was the culminating event for the Youth Summit, and a welcomed unique opportunity featured within the ADHT program.  It was a rousing success for all participants.
