Health Information
The volunteer is responsible for obtaining immunization prior to making the trip abroad. The following vaccines are recommended:
  • Hepatitis A (lifetime duration)
  • Hepatitis B (required for health personnel)
  • Tetanus Toxoid Booster (good for 10 years)
  • Typhoid
  • Malaria Prophylaxis (The volunteer should talk with his/her physician for recommendations and prescriptions. One tablet a week is recommended for most prophylaxis, beginning two weeks prior to departing and continuing for at least two weeks after returning to the States.)
  • Yellow Fever (recommended only if you are traveling in more than one developing country)
  • Cholera Neither (neither required nor recommended by WHO and AHEAD) 

 

Medical Insurance 

U.S. medical insurance is not always valid outside the United States. The volunteer must check with his/her insurance company to confirm whether the policy applies overseas, including provision for medical evacuation. The volunteer must ascertain whether payment (not covered by AHEAD) will be made to the overseas hospital or doctor, or whether he/she will be reimbursed later for expenses that mignt be incurred.
